In short
  • Every new tech gets laughed at first. Then everybody runs ads on it.
  • A fad asks you to act like someone else. A shift moves where your buyer is.
  • Ai is just another way of branding and marketing, because it is a part of tech.
  • The real work never changed. Be the expert on your subject, out loud, again and again.
  • Founder led brands win the next decade, because people connect with people.

In 2019 I watched business owners laugh at the app where people danced. They said it was for teenagers. They said nobody was going to buy anything there. Just 2 years into it, those same owners were making business content on it and running ads on it.

I have been watching this same thing happen for over a decade, every single year. A new piece of tech arrives. People hate it or laugh at it. Then everybody runs ads on it.

Right now Ai is standing in that exact spot. Owners tell me Ai is going to kill creativity. They tell me their business is doing well, so why put Ai into their organization at all. I have heard this sentence before. Only the word in the middle keeps changing.

They laugh. Then they queue.

01The same joke comes back every few years

Before the internet, a business promoted itself on television, radio, newspapers, banner ads, trees, walls, paintings and posters. That was the whole list, and it worked. So nobody felt they needed the internet.

that is how it worked back then

Then the internet came and it changed how a business gets found. Then social media came. And owners said they did not need to be on YouTube, because nobody is going to watch a 20 minute episode when a 1 minute ad slot on television is the thing that matters.

The pattern

Same story, new tool

  1. 01
First they say it is not for business

It is for kids, for dancers, for people with free time.

  2. 02
Then a few founders start anyway

They look silly for a few months. They learn the place.

  3. 03
    Then the buyers move in

The audience is there, so the money follows the audience.

  4. 04
Then everybody runs ads on it

And the people who started early are already known there.

Look at Facebook. A couple of years back owners said it was not for them. Right now Facebook ads is the number one platform to promote on, and every business is trying to hire a performance marketer who can run Meta ads.

  • 2019the year owners said the dancing app was only for dancers
  • 2years later they were posting business content and running ads on it
  • 1minute of television was supposed to beat a 20 minute YouTube episode
Hand drawn sketch: Old televisions, a radio and bundles of newspapers stacked at the kerb outside a house while a delivery man carries a fresh box through the front door
Every tool was once the new one.

02How I tell a fad from a shift

This is my own test and it is simple. A fad asks you to act like somebody you are not. A shift changes where your buyer is standing. The dancing looked like a fad. The buyers moving there was the shift.

simple test but it is exactly right

The test

Fad or shift

A fadA shift
What it asks of you

Act like somebody else

Say what you already say, in a new place

Who is already there

A small crowd having fun

Your buyer, looking for an answer

If you skip it

Nothing happens

Fewer people find you every month

Cost to start

A whole new plan

1 hour a week and your own voice

Where it ends up

Gone in a year

Everybody running ads on it

Ai looks like a fad because of the noise around it. It is a shift, because the way people look you up has moved there. That is the only part I care about.

So the question is never whether a new thing is cool. The question is whether your buyer has started using it. If the answer is yes, you start this week, even badly, because being bad early still puts you years ahead of starting late.

You are not early. You are on time. It only looks early because people are still joking about it.

03Ai is standing in that spot right now

I hear the same 3 lines in almost every meeting. Owners are not being lazy when they say them. They said the same things about the internet, about YouTube, about the dancing app, and they were wrong each time.

owners always say not right now

Sound familiar

The lines I hear about Ai

  • Ai is going to kill creativity.
  • My business is doing well, so why should I put Ai into my organization.
  • It is a tech thing. It is not my job.

Here is how I see it. Ai is just another way of branding and marketing, because it is a part of tech. The internet was a part of tech. Social media was a part of tech. The tool is new every time. The job is the same every time, which is getting your brand in front of the person who is about to buy.

Hand drawn sketch: A farmer leaning on his fence laughing at a neighbour who is out planting seeds early in the morning, a watering can standing in the fresh soil
Plant before the rain arrives.
Ai is not a new job. It is a new place to do the old job.

04The newest version of this joke is AEO and GEO

Watch it happening live. People still think brand building means writing website articles, doing keyword research and running Semrush, Ahrefs, Ubersuggest and the rest of it. Useful tools. But they are forgetting the part that was always the real work.

Topical authority. Being the expert on your subject, out loud, again and again, until people and machines both agree that you are the one. That is how an honest brand has always been built.

What changed is where that proof lives. It is no longer only on your website articles, your blog, a forum, Quora or Reddit. It is across the whole internet now, social media included. Google Search Console lets us index and crawl Instagram pages and TikTok pages. Instagram pages are showing up in the top 10 results of Google.

The new shelf

Where your brand gets checked now

  • 01Google search

Your site, and now your social pages sitting right next to it.

  • 02Your Instagram and TikTok pages

They get crawled and indexed like a website does.

  • 03ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity

Somebody asks an Ai about your brand. Something comes up. Is it you, and what is it saying.

Digital Pratik smiling while working on his laptop

And all of it is built from one boring thing. What you post about your business, day after day. There is no setting to switch this on. There is only what you have been saying in public.

05Life is a macro niche

I firmly believe there is nothing like a micro niche. Life is a macro niche. Everybody's life is their own macro niche. There are moments in it, things in it, tastes in it, small niches in it, and you should be talking about all of them.

Say you are in real estate. Somebody who is going to buy an apartment from you one day has not come to you yet. You love badminton, you play it well, and you talk about it. Your prospect also plays badminton. They watch that, and they feel connected to you.

Then 8 or 10 or 23 days later they see you talking about real estate out of nowhere, and they recall it. Oh, this is my badminton guy. Let me just speak to him. 50% of the connection is already made before you say a single word about property.

Hand drawn sketch: 2 men shaking hands at the net after a badminton game, rackets under their arms, a tube of shuttles on the bench beside the court
Half the trust, already built.

Most owners post only what their business sells. Business content, business content, business content. That is the mistake. People were making it on every platform before this one, they are making it with Ai now, and they will make it on whatever comes next.

People think they have to talk about what their business sells. The job is to build a brand.

06Founder led brands win the next decade

Anybody with a human led brand is going to win big over the next 10 years. Founder led brands. Not logos. People associate with people. People connect with people. That has not changed since we started selling things to each other.

Think about the founder of the biggest platform we all promote our business on. He was not on camera for years. He did not need to be. In the past 1 or 2 years he is suddenly posting. Why. Because his competitors are not only other social platforms any more. They sit in the Ai space now. Everybody is competing at everybody else's level, so the founder himself has to show up.

Hand drawn sketch: A busy market where one stall owner in an apron hands a parcel to a customer himself while the stalls on either side have only a signboard and an empty chair
People buy from people.

You do not need a studio or a crew. You need your own face, your own voice and your own opinions, in the place your buyer is already looking, before everybody else gets there and the price of attention goes up.

This week

Pick 1 Ai tool you have been joking about, use it for 1 real job in your business this week, then post what happened in your own words.

07Questions, answered

Should my business use Ai now or wait?

Start now, in a small way. Every tech I have watched got laughed at first and then everybody ran ads on it, and the ones who moved while it was still a joke were ready when the crowd arrived.

Is Ai worth it for a small service business?

Yes, because Ai is just another way of branding and marketing. It is a part of tech, the same way the internet was. You do not need a big system. You need 1 real job in your business done with it this week.

Will Ai kill creativity in marketing?

I have heard that line about every new tool. The tool changes. The job of saying something true in your own voice does not change at all.

How early should I adopt new marketing tech?

Ask 1 question. Has my buyer started using it. If the answer is yes, you are not early, you are on time, even while people are still making fun of it.

Is it too late to start on a platform everybody is already on?

Late, not closed. Late just means you pay more for the same attention. So the better habit is to start on the thing being mocked right now.

Start before the laughing stops.
